User Testing for Barista Resource App

The Ask:

Our client, a large chain coffee house, had their baristas using an outdated, bloated Sharepoint application to store all the items one might need on a daily basis – from references for beverage recipes and food allergens, to training regimens and troubleshooting broken equipment. Due to the limitations of Sharepoint and the lack of maintenance on the application, it had become unwieldy for the baristas to use, especially in high pressure situations that demanded a quick response.

We were tasked to work alongside the client’s in house team to develop a solution for the resource app. We had the opportunity to perform several rounds of user testing with the baristas in conjunction with the client team. We ran testing over 3 rounds, using the feedback in real time to make adjustments to both wireframes and designs.

Materials Delivered:

  • User Testing Guide and Script
  • User Testing Sessions (6 sessions per round)
  • User Testing Report

Results

  • Findings in User Testing sessions directly impacted both the wireframes and the design phases of the app, helping not only direct our own work but also our findings and recommendations being incorporated by the in house team.
  • Being able to run A/B testing with users, we were able to select the better design solution on features such as search and bottom rail navigation.
  • The running of user sessions and our follow up reports to the in house team further strengthened our collaboration. We developed a strong relationship with our client that has left the door open for further work.
  • Upon launched, baristas have agreed that the new Resource Hub has improved their workflow and made store operations more efficient.
